The Goriška Brda (Gorizia Hills) are deemed to be the most beautiful wine-growing region in Slovenia, where small villages intertwine with numerous vineyards. The cycling trip will begin in the Dobrovo settlement where you will visit the famous renaissance castle and then make your way across the picturesque landscape – a true paradise for cyclists. You will stop for a break in the medieval Šmartno settlement, where the narrow streets will take you to the traditional house of the region (Briška Hiša). Then you can climb to the top of the lookout tower from where you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the undulating wine-growing landscape.

In Dobrovo there used to be an old castle, which fell to ruins in the course of the centuries. In its place a new renaissance building emerged in the beginning of the 17th century. The original castle has been conserved in relatively the same shape and is today one of the nicest in the Goriška region.

Here you can visit the birth house of Alojz Gradnik, a great poet who masterfully depicted the nature of Brda and its people in numerous collections of poems. Another poet, Ludvik Zorzut, was born in the same house. His poems about the life in Brda were less sophisticated, often in dialect and included many ethno motifs. Renowned Medana wine growers keep collections of art works created during MMMart painting colonies. From the village where an international poetry festival named Days of Poetry and Wine is held every year in August, there is a beautiful view of the Vipolže plain – it is said that Mussolini planned to dam the plain, create an artificial lake and afterwards build hotels on its shores.

Šmartno
A picturesque medieval village with a Mediterranean character.

Šmartno is situated in the geographical centre of Brda. Gradnik, the local poet, compares the village with the eagle´s nest resting on a place, where the view stretches from the Nanos hill in the east to the Carnija Alps in the northwest, and from the Furlanija to the Adriatic Sea. The village on the top of the hill, surrounded by defence walls with watchtowers is first mentioned in 1317.
